The Mediterranean climate of Malta has hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The sun shines down for long hours exceeding half a day in summer and even in winter the area gets as much as 5 to 6 hours of sun. Mainland Europe experiences distinct changes in season, but Malta has a stark change from summer to winter and back with almost no evidence of an autumn or spring. Summer announces itself with a sharp rise in temperature while winter comes with the arrival of tropical showers. Although rainfall here is limited to less than 600 mm annually.

Though the summer temperatures in Malta can soar up to 30 °C, the heat does not feel oppressive as the sea breeze keeps the land cool. A hot wind called Xlokk may make the temperature rise and bring humidity during spring and autumn months. The bright side is that Malta only has scanty rainfall in the winter months.

Summer lasts from May to October, which is much longer than in Italy. The seas surrounding the islands tend to be quite calm and water temperatures are between 24 and 26 ºC. Swimming can continue uninterrupted for the better part of the year, owing to the low rainfall - the activity is especially welcome in summer to get away from the heat on shore. All you'll need to decide on is which beach to swim out from!

Overall, temperatures in Valletta can range from 10.3 °C to 30.7 °C.

Required Clothing

Carry light cotton or linen clothing if you're visiting anytime from March to September. If you're travelling towards the end or beginning of summer, you could need the odd light jacket or warm clothing. Bring a raincoat if you are here in winter - this is the only time of year you may experience rain showers.
